New Year's in Berlin

For me, New Year's Eve has always been a bit of a disappointment.  It's one of those days thats built up to fail: you must find the perfect dress, the perfect guy, the perfect party, insert the perfect "whatever" here.  Everything must unfold just so, in a very particular manner, so that it will culminate in the most fabulous night, climaxing with champagne kisses as the glittering ball drops at midnight.

But alas, this has never been how I ushered in a New Year.  And I always secretly dreaded this highly anticipated night.  That is until I had my First Fab New Year's Eve - EVER - in Berlin.

This New Year's we gathered with Sami's friends for a potluck dinner with drinks.  Afterward a few hours of eating, drinking and good conversation, we all gathered on the rooftop to ring in the new year.  While it was snowing and bone-chillingly cold, I barely noticed because the night felt just right.  We drank champagne and watched the various fireworks over Berlin as the snow prettily fell all around.  It was a beautiful night.

But of course, at midnight, the night was just beginning.  After defrosting from standing in the cold we headed to a latin club.  In my opinion, the perfect way to bid adieu to an old year and welcome a new one is do it while dancing - which is exactly what we did until 7 a.m.  As a new day and new year began to unfold, we finally returned to Sami's apartment on the metro as I munched on a croissant (always love the nights that end AFTER breakfast).  After awaking sometime late that afternoon, we spent the rest of the day resting, eating and watching really bad reality TV.

While I still don't know that I believe in the perfect New Year's (or if I really even like this holiday for that matter), I'd say that this was about as close to perfect as it gets.

Ringing in the New Year in Berlin

Besos,
